The history of Tranquebar Gin begins in late 1615 when a Dutch brewer, Jan De Willum’s, produces a “Jenever” based on spices and herbs obtained from the East. “Jenever” is the Dutch word for “Juniper”. Tranquebar was a Danish colony with a long history. In 1714 the word “Gin”, derived from the word “Jenever”, first appeared in an English-language textbook.
Tranquebar Colonial Gin 45% ABV contains a range of spices, each of which comes from the South Indian region. In the 1600s, these exotic spices were almost worth their weight in gold and were the direct reason why the Danish colony of Tranquebar was founded in Southeast India. Specifically, cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, angelica root, lemon, vanilla, nutmeg, bitter orange, orange are used. Now, as then, these warm aromatic spices from the Indian subcontinent dominate this Premium Small Batch Gin, giving it a sense of sweetness combined with the bitterness of citrus. Cedar, mint leaves, berries and coriander dominate the substrate with a sense of vanilla and nutmeg to take it off.
