The fifth edition of the award-winning Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare limited edition series, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas, explores the character of exceptional and rare whiskies from one of the world’s most famous Grain Whisky distilleries, Glasgow’s Port Dundas ghost distillery.
This famed distillery, located on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, has been shipping its distinctive Scotch whisky from Glasgow to ports around the world for almost 200 years. Built in 1811, at the highest point in the city’s rich commercial history, Port Dundas became the locomotive of whisky blending. It eventually evolved into a distillery known for its distinctive, sweet and delicate character before closing in 2010.
The team of whisky experts Johnnie Walker, led by Johnnie Walker Master Blender Dr Emma Walker, selected the most distinctive expressions of aged whisky from Port Dundas for this new limited edition. To complement the aromatic character of Port Dundas wood spices, Emma and her team selected two other ‘ghost’ whiskies from Cambus and Brora distilleries before pairing them with other very rare Scots from five iconic distilleries – creating something really extraordinary.
Emma, who has been working in Johnnie Walker’s team for more than a decade, chose to shed light on these incredible expressions from Port Dundas by selecting a small number of distinct, aged whiskies from our stocks, all aged in two different types of wood to add depth and layers to the blend – with our second-fill aged American oak whiskies bringing a touch of creamy vanilla, and the scotch from American oak primate highly smoked, bringing a delicate spicy spice. Creamy, woody notes from Port Dundas embrace vanilla and soft smoke from Cambus’ ghost whiskies and original Brora stocks. Other very rare whiskies from Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie reveal notes of spicy apples along with Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk, which bring aromas of peaches and berries.
